Cast of characters:
Richard Nixon – who got elected claiming a plan to end the Viet Nam war.  Nixon had his so called “Southern Strategy” which involved going slow on school desegregation. Not mentioned in the poem is Lt William Calley who was leading the platoon during the My Lai massacre.  Although Lt Calley was sentenced to life later reduced to 20 years, eventually his term was reduced to house arrest and eventually pardoned by Nixon after three years.

John Mitchell – Near the beginning of his administration, Nixon had ordered Mitchell to go slow on desegregation of schools in the South as part of Nixon’s “Southern Strategy”.   Mitchell was in charge of the “dirty tricks” Nixon used against his enemies.  Eventually, Mitchell’s involvement in Watergate sent him to prison.

General Creighton Abrams – World War II hero who Nixon appointed to gradually wind down the war. It was on his watch the My Lai massacre occurred.

Mendel Rivers – Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee as the U.S. escalated its involvement in the Vietnam War.  He used his position to try to cover up the My Lai massacre.

Bush43 – George W. Bush our 43 president whose administrating started the Iraq war using questionable evidence.  He was criticized for starting an unnecessary war with the consequence the trillion dollar expense was diverted away from many domestic needs and the ongoing war in Afghanistan.

John Bolton – Lifelong republican sometimes called neocon by his detractors. As Undersecretary of State he helped assemble the questionable evidence for “weapons of mass destruction” used to justify the Iraq war.

General Colin Powell – As Secretary of State, he presented the “weapons of mass destruction” case to the U.N. thus ensuring the beginning of the Iraq war.  In an odd circumstance when he was serving in Viet Nam he was given the assignment of investigating the My Lai massacre.

Hillary Rodham Clinton – As the Democrat senator from New York she voted for the Iraq war ensuring many domestic programs she favored would not get funded.

MRE – Meal Ready to Eat.  A self-contained, individual field ration in lightweight packaging bought by the United States military for its service members for use in combat. This usage is part of the trillion dollars diverted away from domestic programs to fund the Iraq war.
